Anticipation… “Is Makin’ Me Late, Is Keepin’ Me Waitin’”

Who can forget Carly Simon singing “Anticipation”?

Expectantly waiting for that wonderful night to happen?  The state of looking forward to something pleasant is so heady, so delicious that sometimes what you actually experience may be less than what you have built up in your mind.

Nevertheless, having moments of anticipation in your life lift you from your every-day  routine and give you shots of feel-good feelings so important to your well-being.

How can you create moments of yummy anticipation?

  1. Reward Yourself. You know Tuesday is going to be a killer day.  A proposal to write topped with a major presentation in the afternoon.  How do you get through it?  Reward yourself at the end of the day.  As simple as a latte in a favorite coffee shop before you head home.  Or order in instead of preparing dinner.  Pick up a movie to watch later on when the kids are already in bed.  These small actions will fuel your feel-good tank – they’re like the light at the end of the tunnel.
  2. Enter Contests. Whether it’s a painting you’ve submitted or a poem or a video, entering contests gives you a double whammy of happiness.  The satisfaction of completing something feels wonderful; the anticipation of waiting to see if you’ve won or placed puts you in that zone that’s above normal.  Once you’ve tasted its sense of “what if?”, “I can do it” and “I got to do this again”, you’re on your way to some great personal moments.
  3. Dream Dreams. If you do not have something to look forward to then the moment of anticipation will never come to your door.  Setting goals to achieve dreams you have: completing the college degree; traveling to Europe; opening your own business; allow you to take steps to move ahead in the direction YOU WANT TO GO.  Anticipation is all about the potential fulfillment of your personal goals and dreams.

So what are you waiting for?  Break free of routine and plant some stretches of anticipation on your path.  As Carly sings, “These are the good old days…” right now.
