Listening is just That
“How many times do you know just what to say to someone else who’s approached you with their concerns? You have the perfect personal experience, anecdote, illustration for them and can’t wait to share the latter with them, feeling it’s ideal for helping them out in their situation. You’re so pleased they came to you – after all, with all the ready solutions in your head, it will feel mighty good to remedy what’s distressing them. But hold on here…have they asked you for advice? Are they talking more than is usual for them? Is there no momentary pause from them to signal your verbal entry into the conversation? Well, guess what? It looks like they don’t want your wisdom right now. They just want to talk. They want to let it all out – and you are there just to be there and listen. That’s right: no opening your mouth to chime in whatsoever. Listening is just that.”
To your Happiness,
